The Mont Fort Nappe is a Middle Penninic tectonic unit of the Western Alps extending from the Valle d’Aosta in the SSW to the Val d’Anniviers in the NNE. Its basement (similar to the upper, monocyclic part of that of the Siviez-Mischabel Nappe) ends as an anticline in the Val d’Hérémence, just downstream of the Grande Dixence Dam, but its Permian – Mesozoic sedimentary cover (characteristically including a large accumulation of breccias;) continues towards the east and forms pinched recumbent frontal folds with the lower part of the Tsaté Nappe up to the Lac de Moiry. Southward, the Mont Fort Nappe is interrupted by the Col de Bard Fault, but equivalent units are found further south in the Valle d’Aosta and in the Vanoise mountain range.

-
The Siviez-Mischabel Nappe is a Middle Penninic tectonic unit of the Western Alps. It is made up of a crystalline basement with rocks of sedimentary and magmatic origin (Proterozoic to Ordovician), covered by a typical Briançonnais sedimentary cover. A Permian metagranite (Randa Orthogneiss) intruded the crystalline basement and the Permian cover. The sedimentary cover includes Permian to Triassic formations, completed by Jurassic to Eocene formations only in the normal limb of the nappe between Zermatt and the Val d’Anniviers, especially well developed in the Barrhorn region. Further west, the sedimentary cover is detached at the level of the Middle Triassic evaporites and form the Préalpes Médianes Rigides.

The Ruitor Nappe is a Middle Penninic tectonic unit of the Western Alps, extending from the Valle d’Aosta into the Val de Bagnes, where it pinches out between the Zone Houillère and the Siviez-Mischabel Nappe. It is characterized by a polycyclic basement with numerous pre-Alpine relics, covered by Permian clastic rocks. These latter lithologies are in contact with the Permian cover of the Siviez-Mischabel Nappe, so that the tectonic contact that separates these two nappes is rarely recognizable in the field.

The Zone Houillère is the lowest tectonic unit of the Middle Penninic of the Western Alps. It is subdivided by a thrust fault into an external part, dissected into numerous slices, and a more continuous internal part. It comprises mainly Late Carboniferous to Permian metasediments, locally rich in coal (as its name implies), accompanied by Early and Middle Triassic sediments. The rest of the series, from the Middle Triassic upward, was detached to form the Préalpes Médianes Plastiques.
