p.64: The definition of this new unit follows from the integration of the Goms Zone into the Gotthard Nappe. In order to maintain tectonic independence of the Goms Zone with respect to the rest of the polycyclic metamorphic basement, all other lithological units traditionally forming the polycyclic metamorphic basement of the Gotthard Nappe were grouped together into this new unit (equivalent to the “Proto-Gotthard” of MERCOLLI et al.1994).
Following MERCOLLI et al.(1994), the Ausserbinn-Piz Cavel Zone was subdivided into three lithostratigraphic units: (1) the Paradis Gneiss Complex (GMP), (2) the Val Nalps Gneiss Complex (GN) and (3) the “Streifengneis” Complex (GOS). These three units represent a key structure for unravelling the pre -Variscan evolution of the polycyclic metamorphic basement of the Central Alps. Well-preserved mutual original contacts and relics of metamorphic parageneses have permitted workers since the 1940s to define the sequence of geological events recorded in these rocks (HUBER 1943, NIGGLI 1944). Recent geochronological data attributed absolute ages to these events conserved in the crystalline rocks (SERGEEV & STEIGER 1993, 1995, OBERLI et al.1994, SCHALTEGGER 1994).
